How Will Your Celebrate on Mother's Day?

By David Bakshi

Mother's Day is the first Sunday in May. How do we celebrate it and do the mothers impact our economy? There have been some thoughts among the economist in the past, about the value of house work that mothers do and consequently how they enriched our economy. The fact is that they only work for love and affection and Mother's Day is our opportunity to repay them in kind. I still have my mother alive and well and, being in my forties, therefore, consider Mother's Day my duty, as well. On the other side, of the coin, there are businesses that will help us to pay homage to our mothers, and they will enjoy Mother's Day as the opportunity to make money. For most of it might be long awaited and planned opportunity. While talking to some, you will notice the desperation and expectation of business, riding on the event. Many restaurants in Toronto have already planned for celebration, prepared special menus that have been printed or made posting on their websites, hoping to attract a large crowd for Mother's Day. Flower shops in Toronto are businesses with highest hope and expectation of cashing in. The development is right across Canada. Mother's Day is an important event, however, on the scale comparing to other holidays, like Valentine's Day, it is a smaller event-day in comparison. The gift-giving is confined to flowers and dining. Our mothers are loved, but in a different way, we love our wives, lovers and girlfriends. Consequently we spend much more on the later ones, than on our mothers.

Our economy counts on both days, the Valentine's and Mother's Day and all other holidays, to deliver spending. Seed of a successful economy lays in the grade school years, when children are taught about Mother's Day. How to prepare their first greeting cards, engrave with wishes and love for their moms. It is a start life-long habit giving and caring and building our economy, as well. Whether we like it or agree with it, or not, somebody's personal expression of love makes somebody's cash register to ring.

If we ask a florist in Toronto or a restaurant owner, which day-event, they like more and prefer to have. The answer for sure is in favor of Valentine's. It is just bigger cash-flow event, in terms of money spent by us, customers. Their hope is in Mother's day, but as one owner of fine dining restaurant in Toronto, told me today, they are usually closed on Sunday, and they will not open, just for the Mother's Day.

Flowers are universal for expression of our care for and fondness for somebody. Nobody knows more about the subject than the florists in Toronto. For Mother's Day celebration, flowers are usual must, but for some, the only gift they will give to their mothers. If we live in the same household with our mother, we might buy a boutique of flowers for the way home. Every street lined with stores; they will be selling flowers just for that day. Street vendors with flowers are in full force will be found on many corners, subway stop and all major intersections. Some are independents, but most of them belong to the same company, supplying the flowers and employing commission sales people just for Mother's Day. How much planning goes into that? Some vendors are just the school kids, looking for extra money. Depending on the location they are assigned to, they might make some good money, but most of them will be happy make a minimum wage per hour. The competition among the sellers is just so stiff.

More and more flower buyers for Mothers Day are migrating to the Web. It is special true for the adult population, where you will not have the opportunity to see your mother, on the same day. Buyers are in a hurry, feel the obligation and just want to get it done. Flower delivery services have been with us for longer, than anybody can remember. For past twelve years or so, we have an opportunity to select perfect flowers, card or any extra and do it online. Buying the flowers online for Mother's Day is no longer domain of early adopters, but mainstream purchasing style.

It is just a matter of time, when Web phones will become the major tool to buying flowers online. Unfortunately, the florists in Toronto have not figured it out yet, what a convenience for buyers, if they only had their websites designed for Web phones. Roses red and multicolored, packaged in different forms are always the flowers of first choice. 2 Dozen roses and Irises make a dazzling combination for any mother. Do not forget to send a greeting card with your selection ordered online, to be delivered by a local florist in Toronto or any place, where your mother lives. Yes, Mother's Day specials can be ordered online using PC from our home or office, using mobile Internet, but not from the web phones yet. Perhaps online florists will realize their mistake and create small mobile websites?

Taking your mother to the restaurant of her choice for a special dinner ranks high on the list of Mother's Day celebration. Chinese Food delivery places are all very busy on this Sunday, bringing in extra help to prepare and deliver the food. Some restaurants require an advance reservation. Yorkville restaurants in Toronto and Danforth restaurants all have a special Mother's Day Menu for fixed prices. It is a special treat for most mothers and you should make most out of it.
