English as a Second Language in Toronto

By John Pozniakowski

English as a second language is offered in Toronto to both international students, ones on a student-visa in Canada and students with immigrant status in Canada. This course can be for absolute beginners or those advanced students to improve command of the English language. In addition to this, this course also helps students to learn to understand our Canadian way of live and to integrate into the Western culture. The number of students enrolling for this course is increasing every year. More schools and many different institutions offer it now. This course comes on different levels of academic standards, depending where it is taught, and there is no established standard for the course. Prospective students can information online, right from their home country. They can search and sign up with a prospective school of their choice online, and the school will offer a complete package, including assistance with visa, accommodation and welcome upon arrival.

Some younger International students might prefer to go to private boarding schools to study for the English as a second language together with their regular academic curriculum. This is more expensive option, but provides also general education. Parents, who are mostly thousands of miles away, prefer it. It will give them a peaceful mind, when they know their children are secure and safe, they worry less. Students, who have gained a deeper understanding of English, or those who it is their first language, normally do not need to take any ESL courses. They study advanced English. For foreigner students, this course is very good all-round experience to be in Toronto, while it greatly improves the students' command of the English language. This is very advantageous in the long run because it will help students to blend in and understand the Western culture and Canadian way of life, as well.

A boarding school can be an excellent choice for those young, arriving to Toronto alone. This is because these students are many miles away from home and need to be safe and secure. In addition to this, their parents also get enough peace of mind knowing that their children are at a boarding school, and not some hostel or hotel for that matter and they live and learn with others, equal of their age. Students who take this course sharpen their command of English and make new international friendships for live. It is an opportunity to learn not just English, but those all-important social skills. They also blend in well with the other students who understand English well or it is their first language. Learning of English is not just for children and those younger, but also for adults of all age. Absolute beginner's classes are often offered by local community centers and usually at no charge. They will not prepare you for the university studies, but they will provide the basis to live and work in Canada or to your further academic education.

The Toronto ESL available is usually closer to American English than British English. However, the difference between the two languages is not very significant. This is because speakers of the two dialects can understand both the languages well. The difference is only small and it is in the spelling of a few distinct words, spelling idioms and few phrases. Students who are taught English as a second language in Toronto will be provided with a distinction between two, but taught mostly our Canadian English version of the language.

The lessons of English as a second language in Toronto usually include the basic of English. These are vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and in class conversation. To have an opportunity to practice lessons learnt in the classroom, able to do it right away, it is one of great benefits. It is always wise to ensure that the school you wish to learn ESL is a recognized institution with qualified teachers. Do not hesitate to ask about qualification and experience, before you sign any contract. Many schools will also let interested kids of their parents attend a class in progress as a guest. Ongoing improvement of English writing skills is not just for people born in other countries. Many native Canadians, while they are in the middle of their business careers in Canada, they suddenly realize a need for improvements in grammar writing skills. Many private schools have recognized such a need as their business opportunity and offer special English courses at night that are geared toward those, who have English as their first language. Since my arrival to Canada few years ago, with no knowledge of English at all, I have been able to attend all these classes and experienced them first-hand.
