Kellen Moore dismantled the Georgia defense in the Boise State season opener to not only make a statement for the Broncos, but to clearly establish himself as the leader in a race that pre-season picks offered up for Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to walk away with on his way to becoming a top NFL draft pick.
Luck, as the pre-season Heisman favorite should have posted big numbers in the opener against lowly San Jose State. The Cardinals dominated the Spartans in every aspect of the game yet Luck had a less than stellar performance completing just 17 of 26 pass attempts for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. His 65 pct. completion rate and yardage were enough to lead Stanford to the win, but not the kind of numbers you expect from a Heisman Trophy candidate playing against probably the weakest secondary he'll see all year.
LaMichael James, last years leading risher and considered by many to be a close second to Luck in the pre-season Heisman race walked into Texas Stadium to face the depleted defense of the Tigers of LSU with high hopes for a breakout game in the season opener for the Ducks. The Tigers defense had different ideas and held James to just 54 yards on 18 carries. James averaged only 3 yards per carry and scored 1 touchdown. James was slightly limited in his play after suffering a minor ankle injury early in the game.
Alabama's Trent Richardson was expected to step in and become the next Mark Ingram and possibly challenge for the Heisman Trophy with Luck and James. The Tide opened their season at home against Kent State of the MAC and although Richardson should have run wild on the Kent State defense, he was held to just 37 yards on 13 carries and like James, averaged about 3 yards per carry.
The pre-season Heisman predictions had Moore as the number four candidate in the race, which is exactly where he finished in the voting last year. Moore however had different ideas as he led the Broncos to a whipping of the 19th ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. All Moore did was surgically dismantle the Georgia defense completing 28 of 34 passes for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns. Moore was without the Broncos main deep threat speedster in Geraldo Boldweijn who stayed in Boise after some concerns were raised over the Netherlands born receivers eligibility. Moore's 82.3 pct. completion rate was the best of any FBS quarterback during opening week and worthy of moving him up the depth chart on the Heisman hopeful list.
History would dictate that Luck, James and Richardson will still remain ahead of Moore in the Heisman race simply because of the benefit from a large conference bias, but if week 1 is any indicator of the remainder of the season, maintaining the status quo of the first game could very well see the diminutive quarterback from Boise State shuffling home with the hardware.
