The idea of Google+ having a suggested user list may be a good idea for the celebrities and socialites who feel they aren't quite famous enough, but for the average person it doesn't make much sense to me. And of course it further perpetuates the notion that these are the people of the world which we should bow down to daily.
But average people are not the only ones who have a problem with this service, even some web personalities are upset with the idea. You can't really blame them though, I mean Paris Hilton made the list I would want my name removed immediately. Her name just being there proves what this list is setting out to do, saying to the public everyone thing these people do is gold, so follow them. However according to the VP of production this is only temporary, and not the kind of list they want.
But during further inspection it would seem number of followers is not the only criteria Google follows. An accountant for Pandora was surprised that she made the list as she does not come close to 6000 followers. It would seem they were also putting high contributors on the list, anyone who could buy their way in. Now obviously this isn't bad business, however the list is already doing what many feared.
Egos are now flaring, many are becoming frustrated by not making the list, and they will shovel money at whomever in order to make this magnificent list. Many worry this will alienate alot of Google+ users do to the entire preceding ego clash.
It will also inflate other egos in another way, as far as I can tell it is really hard to get invited to this program. Its not like Facebook or Myspace where you anyone can join, as it is in the trial period. So Google is letting very few people in. There are ways to get in; one is to get an invite from someone already inside. If that doesn't work you can always bite the bullet and sign up to request Google to take you on board. Also it seems that to some who have seen the list feel there are allot of people who should be on the list who aren't. In doing research I found one quote which really summed up how I felt.
