Use These Techniques & Methods To Take Better Photographs

By Adam Punting

After I bought my first electronic camera, complete along with its tiny viewing screen, people would sometimes ask, "Can I see the picture?" Kids would ask me to take their picture, and then run over and ask to see it, then run back and ask me to take another!

It's good to have all that excitement, but were my pictures basically the best they could be?

Here are 7 tips that I have learned that have improved the standard of my photographs.

1. Always use the highest resolution setting. At the start , I had the resolution set to medium. That way I was able to take in the region of 100 pictures before having to download the memory card to my computer's hard disk. That was fine for viewing on screen, but then one day I would have liked to do an 8x10 paper version, and the results were displeasing. Now I mostly use the highest resolution my cameras can provide. I've had to spend some money on more memory cards, although it was worth it.

2. Utilize a Tripod. Even the smallest movement of the camera can create a blurred image. Invest in a tripod. I have also discovered that when taking group shots, I'm better prepared to judge when to "click" if I'm looking without delay at the group, rather than through the view finder.

3. Get a Good Photo-Editing Program. Perhaps your camera came with Photoshop Elements, or similar. If not, go to your computer retailer and buy one. Not only can you fix marks (perhaps Susan was having a bad zit day), but you can do more creative things also. Latterly I combined a photograph of my granddaughter with one of Dora-the-Explorer. Jasmine loved it.

4. Use the Lowest Compression Setting. As you use that fancy photograph modifying programme, be wary of your compression setting. Most programs default to "jpeg" format, which saves space by selectively removing pixels, and recreating them the next time you view the photo. If you open, edit, and save a photo many times, the over-all quality decreases. Try to do all your editing in one pass, using the lowest compression, or employ a format like "tiff", which doesn't compress.

5. Get in Close. Don't waste pixels on excess background. Get in closer, either physically or with an optical zoom setting.

6. Nice Things Come in Threes (or more). Considering the incremental costs of taking a photograph with a digital camera (close to nil), you must take plenty of shots. If the shot is available for more than a few seconds, take more that one exposure. I tell the subjects of my photographs that I will be taking at least 2 or 3 shots of them. A blink at the wrong time ruins the potential.

7. Read the Book. Actually read it more often than once. As if I must explain this one!

Acting Classes Los Angeles- Lifelike Characters

By Kirk Baltz

When it comes to acting, great abilities cannot be formed overnight. Instead, significant effort and training are required to form an individual skilled in his or her craft. One of the most necessary and yet difficult components of great acting is learning to rip past the facade that covers the actors themselves and the characters they create to reveal the true identities within.

Each person and character alike is multi-faceted as opposed to being one-dimensional and static. These dimensions consist of the individual or character's public persona, his or her deep-seated fears and vulnerabilities, and the tragic flaw. Training with an acting coach can both aid the actor in discovering these dimensions in himself as well as allow him to utilize these personal traits to create very real characters.

According to the works of Carl Jung, humans form their exterior or public personas as a means of exuding a feeling of strength and stability to the world so as to conceal weaknesses buried within. This persona is exemplified in all areas of our lives, from how we move to the way we speak and interact with others. Characters also have personas that they create to protect their true selves from the rest of the world and actors must learn to utilize their own personas to create those of their characters.

It is not uncommon for public personas to be initially viewed as an individual's true identity as many are highly skilled in using this creation to mask their deeper selves. The root of a person's character is grounded in their growth and development from childhood. Acting classes are designed to instruct actors in identifying these difficulties in themselves so as to form multi-dimensional characters that audiences can relate to on a personal level.

These difficulties from our childhood remain with us to adulthood and shape the persona that we create to protect ourselves. Both actors and the characters they create form their public personas as a means of defending themselves from these insecurities. Both actual persons and characters use this public persona to cover up their insecurities and fears so as to reduce their helplessness in the world.

In order to become an exceptional actor, a student must learn to remove the superficial exterior of both his and his character's public persona in order to uncover the true self. Quality coaches work to train actors in communicating the sacred and intimate core of a person's soul and being.

Every member of the audience has both a public persona as well as a deeper substance that has worked to create the exterior. Presenting a character of similar dimensions is sure to create a bond between the audience and the story being told. Being able to create characters such as these is what separates the average actor from the exceptional.

Acting Coach Los Angeles- Facing Vulnerabilities

By Kirk Baltz

True actors are not created in one day. Training with acting coaches or participation in acting classes can help actors to acquire much needed skills to aid them in improving in their craft. To do this, actors are required to face themselves as they truly are, vulnerabilities and strengths alike, to uncover their true selves and create lifelike characters.

Each person and character alike is multi-faceted as opposed to being one-dimensional and static. These facets include the inherent insecurities and fears that are integral in forming our personalities, the persona that we adopt to conceal these vulnerabilities, as well as the tragic flaw. An acting coach can not only help an actor uncover his own dimensions but can also aid him or her in using these traits to create dimensional and relatable characters.

Carl Jung espoused the belief that the human person creates a public persona as a means of protecting his true self from others and conveying an image of strength and security as a means for survival. Expression of this persona occurs in all areas of our lives. Characters also have personas that they create to protect their true selves from the rest of the world and actors must learn to utilize their own personas to create those of their characters.

There is no question that an individual's vulnerabilities are often buried deep beneath the surface, making the public persona seem like the dominant characteristic. However, the core of a person lies in their innate strengths, fears, and issues that travel with us from childhood into adulthood. Acting workshops are quite helpful in training students to come to grips with these important facets of their being, allowing them to create very real characters.

Our childhood challenges and situations mold us as adults and remain with us for the duration of our lifetime. Both actors and the characters they create form their public personas as a means of defending themselves from these insecurities. Covering up these vulnerabilities under a shield of stability is our means of appearing strong rather than helpless to others.

In order to become an exceptional actor, a student must learn to remove the superficial exterior of both his and his character's public persona in order to uncover the true self. This is key to producing real characters for the audience.

All persons in the audience, like the actor and the character, have both a personal core as well as a public persona they have created to protect it. Presenting a character of similar dimensions is sure to create a bond between the audience and the story being told. All great actors must learn to succeed in this form of character creation.

The Arts Desk Reviews - Head to the London Galleries for Visual Arts

By Steve Alexander

Big names feature highly in the selection of art reviews on The Arts Desk this week, although this doesn't always guarantee satisfaction.

We start away from the London galleries in Bath, for something a little different from Thomas Gainsborough. The painter was famed as the leading portraitist in the 18th century, but he also had a passion for painting imagined landscapes. The exhibition 'Gainsborough's Landscapes: Themes and Variations' at the Holburne Museum give a marvellously rich overview of the artist's work.

Sarah Kent was disappointed in her art review of 'Barry Flanagan: Early Works 1965-1982' at Tate Britain, as although his career began thrillingly enough, it gradually went off the boil. Flanagan began working as a true exploratory sensualist and made fun, inventive works using different materials and processes. He soon began to rely on mass-produced works, which have none of the probing and investigative energy that once made him so radical and interesting.

Back in the London galleries now and Pipilotti Rist's exhibition 'Eyeball Massage' at the Hayward Gallery had a feel-good factor about it. Viewers are offered a chandelier made of white knickers and various video projections including graphic close-ups of the female body and a woman behaving like an animal. In this permissive setting, without the presence of any particular strict constraints to kick against though, it lacked the desired impact.

The exhibition 'Frank Stella: Connections' at Haunch of Venison left Josh Spero feeling unmoved by Stella's acclaimed works of Abstract Expressionism. In his ground-breaking experiments with planes, depth, colour fields, angles and three-dimensional painting, the artist is undeniably asking all the right questions about what art can do and what it can represent. It focuses on the gradual development and creation of just two major works, but the human element was entirely missing and the questions being asked were purely academic.
